Accord towns double ban times for drinkers

Alice Springs and Tennant Creek Alcohol Accord members are doubling the banning period for people causing trouble over the Christmas and New Year break.

Anyone caught committing an offence in an Accord-affiliated pub or club in the Northern Territory towns during the period will be barred for two years.

Spokesman Geoff Booth says the decision will protect staff and patrons.

"You want patrons to feel safe in your venue," he said.

"There are some people out there that kind of go overboard.

"It protects not only themselves but also other patrons as well as staff and also our liquor licences.

"We are bound by several laws with that." The move has been made because of increased problems during the "silly season".
